When your family is too busy with their work, have no time for vacation, and there’s nothing that you could do about it – you might be stuck inside your house for the rest of the holiday. But don’t worry, here is a list of things that you could do when you can’t think of anything fun during holidays besides watch movies online or read books:

    • Visit Art Galleries/Art Spaces

Maybe some of you readers might know there are quite a lot of decent (and totally instagrammable) art galleries in Jakarta. There are Gudang Sarinah, Galeri Nasional, Ruci Artspace, Biasa artspace, ROH Projects, and still much more. Visiting this kind of places could make you enjoy your leisure time by seeing something that pleases your eyes, heart, and mind, even if you’re not a big fan of art. These galleries offer you to see paintings, photographs, sculptures, and many other kinds of beautiful art pieces. Most of these art galleries have different exhibitions almost every month. One of the interesting art exhibitions is Jakarta Contemporary Ceramics Biennale, but unfortunately, it just closed on January 22nd, 2017. But don’t worry, there are still many more interesting art exhibitions, also Gudang Sarinah and Galeri Nasional has its own regular programs and permanent exhibitions. Other than art exhibitions, some of these places held workshops, art discussions, and local indie movie screenings.

  1. Enjoy Jakarta

To be clear, this is not promoting Jakarta because of the tagline “Enjoy Jakarta” that you see on ads that promote Jakarta’s tourism, but this is an activity that could make you know Jakarta a little bit deeper. The “thing” that I’m about to explain does promote Jakarta’s tourism, that is, Jakarta’s own tour bus called the “Jakarta Explorer”. If you’re familiar with Hop On Hop Off buses abroad, the Jakarta Explorer bus kind of bus is similar to this kind of bus. There is nothing better than enjoying a unique city when you don’t have to drive. And the good news is – it’s FREE! You could freely hop on and hop off the bus, too. But if you’re too lazy, you could just sit down and enjoy the view. And while you’re exploring, don’t forget to take photos! All the Jakarta Explorer buses are double decker buses. This “explorer” bus invites you to explore Jakarta by taking you to famous Jakarta landmarks and icons. All the bus have their own local tour guides that are dressed in traditional Betawi outfits, and they will explain all about the icons and landmarks that the bus passes. Currently, this tour bus has four routes:

Sejarah Jakarta (History of Jakarta): See the historical places of Jakarta

Jakarta Baru (Modern Jakarta): Exploring the modern side of Jakarta

Kesenian & Kuliner (Art & Culinary): Knowing where to appreciate art (and food!)

Pencakar Langit Jakarta (Jakarta Skyscrapers): Looking at the tall buildings of Jakarta

  1. Hiking

For you thrill seekers out there, hiking is one of many options for you to enjoy your holiday. If you haven’t been hiking before, for starters you could go to Mount Papandayan in Garut. You need around 4 hours to reach the top that is located on 2665 mdpl. Throughout the path, you will see some craters, or kawah, an Edelweiss field, and the famous hutan mati or the “dead forest”. Hiking is tiring, but once you get up on the top of the mountain, it feels so worth it. Most people said after they went hiking, they could reflect the meaning of life. Hiking, especially in Mount Mahameru, has been popular since the movie 5 cm released. There’s nothing better than hiking with your best friends. If you go hiking all by yourself it would be very tiring and there will be no one to share your load with. While if you’re going your friends, whenever you are feeling tired, exhausted, or demotivated, there’s someone by your side to cheer you up.

  1. Discover Kepulauan Seribu

If you need affordable getaway trips for a few days, going to Kepulauan Seribu, or The “Thousand Islands” is one of the options you could think of. It’s not that far away from Jakarta because actually, it’s still under the Province of DKI Jakarta. There are around 11 inhabited islands and a few other inhabited islands that are recreation islands. To reach these islands, you would need around 20 to 90 minutes by speedboat, depends on the distance of the island to Marina Ancol (the place where you get on the boat). To get to some islands you would need hours of boat travel, but it’s worth it. Kepulauan Seribu is classified as an affordable getaway because you won’t need to spend your money on expensive plane tickets and hotel. When you don’t have enough money (and time) to go to Bali, Kepulauan Seribu is not a bad choice!

  1. Internship!

This choice is for you high school graduates or college graduates when you have a long holiday. Almost every company are welcoming, or even seeking for interns. They are happy to teach students like us what the working world is like. Companies that accept interns on purpose are the companies that are looking for help from young people, where we know more about what is trending right now. Some companies pay the interns for their help, but some companies don’t. Paid or not, the important thing is the priceless experience that you get. Having an experience as an intern could be added up to your CV and thus when you are getting a job, it could be an extra point. This is a choice for people that are having a long period of holiday due to most companies’ intern period are more than three months. There are some companies that allow you to intern less than three months, or to start off, maybe you could intern at the company of a parent’s colleague or a relative.
